How TrustShop Prevents Fraudulent and Spam Reviews

Shoppers read reviews before they buy. If those reviews are fake, bought or filtered to hide bad news, the damage goes beyond one store. It weakens trust in every review a shopper sees.

TrustShop helps Shopify merchants collect and display genuine customer reviews. This post explains how we detect and deal with fraudulent or spammy reviews: what we check automatically, what merchants can and can't do, and what happens when someone breaks the rules.

Verified Buyer Reviews

Most reviews in TrustShop come from customers who actually purchased from the store.

  • Order-linked review requests. After a Shopify order is fulfilled, TrustShop emails the customer a review request. The email contains a unique link tied to that specific order and product.
  • "Verified buyer" badge. A review gets this badge only when it is submitted through an order-linked request, or when its email address matches a real order for the reviewed product.
  • Unverified submissions are labeled. Reviews submitted through the open storefront form without a matching order are never marked as verified.

Automated Spam and Abuse Detection

Every new review is screened by TrustShop's review spam protection before it can be published. The checks look for:

  • Duplicate or near-duplicate content submitted across products or reviewers
  • Repeated submissions from the same email address or IP address within a short period
  • Links, promotional content, gibberish and known spam patterns
  • Profanity, hate speech, personal information and other content that breaks our content guidelines

A review flagged by these checks is held for manual review and is never published automatically. Merchants can also use the blacklist to block known abusive sources from submitting further reviews.

Fair Moderation Controls

Merchants have full moderation tools:

  • Auto-publish rules. Merchants choose which reviews go live automatically. Everything else waits in the approval queue.
  • Manual approval queue. Merchants can approve, hide or reject any review.

Moderation is not selective by sentiment. Merchants may remove a review only if it breaks our content guidelines. A low rating or a negative opinion is not grounds for removal. We ask merchants to publish honest negative reviews and reply to them publicly.

Imported Reviews

Merchants can migrate reviews from other Shopify review apps, or import them from marketplaces and CSV files. To keep this transparent:

  • Imported reviews keep their source label and never receive a "Verified buyer" badge from TrustShop.
  • Imported reviews are excluded from the review feeds we send to Google and other third-party review programs.

Incentivized Reviews

Merchants may offer a discount code to encourage customers to leave a review.

  • The incentive is given for leaving a review of any rating. It is never tied to positive sentiment.
  • Reviews collected with an incentive are recorded so they can be disclosed or excluded where a platform's policy requires it.

Prohibited Practices

TrustShop's Terms of Service prohibit merchants from:

  • Writing reviews of their own products, or having employees or affiliates write them
  • Buying reviews or posting reviews from people who did not use the product
  • Editing a customer's review to change its meaning or rating

Merchants cannot change the rating or content of a customer-submitted review. They can only reply to it or moderate it under the guidelines above.

Reporting and Enforcement

When a fake or abusive review is reported, here is what happens:

  1. Report. Shoppers can use the "Report" option on any published review, or email us at hello@trust1.io.
  2. Re-review. The reported review is queued for re-review against our content guidelines.
  3. Investigate. Our team looks into reports of fake reviews and patterns of abuse across the store.
  4. Act. Merchants found posting fake reviews or suppressing genuine ones can have their review feeds to Google and other partners disabled. Their accounts may also be suspended.

Data Sent to Google and Other Partners

Different kinds of reviews are handled differently in the feeds we send to Google Product Ratings, Seller Ratings and other partners:

Review typeShown on storefrontSent to Google & partners
Verified buyer reviewYesYes
Unverified storefront review (passed checks)Yes, without badgeYes
Imported reviewYes, with source labelNo
Flagged or policy-violating reviewNoNo

Final Thoughts

Reviews only help shoppers if they are real. TrustShop verifies buyers, screens every submission for spam, stops merchants from filtering out honest feedback, and acts on reports of abuse. The result is a review section that shoppers can rely on and merchants can be proud of.

Spotted a review you believe is fake? Email us at hello@trust1.io and our team will investigate.
